🤔 WHY BARN-STYLE?
Maximum Storage Without Sacrificing Yard Space
If you need more storage but don't want to take over your entire backyard, the barn-style shed is the answer.
The gambrel (barn) roof design creates a second-story loft that's 4-5 feet tall — enough to store bins, seasonal gear, holiday decorations, and anything else you want up and out of the way.
Below, you get the same 8-foot walls as our standard sheds. Lawn equipment, tools, workbenches, bikes, and everyday items go on the main floor. Seasonal and overflow items go up top.
HOW IT WORKS — TWO LEVELS, ONE FOOTPRINT
4–5 ft Loft
Seasonal gear, bins, decorations, overflow
8 ft Main Floor
Mower, tools, workbench, bikes, everyday gear
40–60% More Space
vs. a standard gable shed of the same footprint

⚖️ COMPARISON
Barn-Style vs. Standard Gable
The main difference is the roof. A standard gable has a triangular roof with wasted attic space.
A barn-style (gambrel) uses that space to create a usable second level.

❓ QUESTIONS
FAQ — Barn-Style Sheds
How tall is the loft in a barn-style shed?
The loft height varies by shed width. On a 10-foot wide shed, the loft is approximately 4 feet tall. On a 12-foot or wider shed, the loft reaches 5+ feet. Enough to stand in a crouch and easily store bins, boxes, and seasonal items.
Can I use the loft as a living space or office?
The loft is designed primarily for storage. While some customers use it as a hobby area or reading nook, it's not tall enough for full standing height in most sizes. For a full-height second level, we'd recommend discussing a custom build during your consultation.
How do I access the loft?
You can use a simple ladder, or we can frame in a pull-down attic stair during the build. Some customers add a permanent staircase in the 16×24 size where floor space allows.
How much weight can the loft hold?
The loft is framed with 2×6 joists — the same heavy-duty framing as the main floor. It's built to hold serious weight: bins, tools, seasonal decorations, sports equipment. It's a real floor, not a shelf.
How much more does a barn-style cost vs. standard?
A barn-style shed typically runs $800–$2,000 more than a standard gable shed of the same footprint. For that, you get 40-60% more usable space thanks to the loft. Most customers consider it the best value upgrade available.
Can I finish the interior of a barn-style shed?
Absolutely. Barn-style sheds can be finished just like any other build — insulation, drywall, flooring, electrical, and HVAC. Check out our Finished Structures page for details on our finish packages starting at $8k–$12k. The loft in a barn-style finished build makes a great storage mezzanine above a finished office or workshop.
