💡 THE CASE FOR A GYM SHED
Why Build a Home Gym Shed?
Gym memberships in Indianapolis average $40-80/month. That's $480-960/year — plus the drive, the parking, waiting for equipment, and wiping down benches after strangers. Over 5 years, you'll spend $2,400-4,800 with nothing to show for it.
A home gym shed puts a fully equipped training space in your backyard — on your schedule, with your music, at your pace. No waiting. No commute. No excuses.
And unlike converting your garage (where you lose your car space and deal with temperature extremes), a dedicated gym shed keeps your workout separate from your living space. The shed is YOUR space.

What you'll spend on gym memberships over 5 years — with nothing to show for it.
A gym shed pays for itself and adds value to your property.
🔩 OUR FLOOR SYSTEM
Built for Heavy Equipment
Most shed builders use 2x4 floor joists with thin plywood or OSB. That might hold your lawn mower, but drop a loaded barbell on it and you'll feel every pound flex beneath your feet.
Our gym shed floors are built different:
Treated 2x6 Floor Joists
Spaced 16" on center — 50% more load capacity than 2x4 construction. Handles concentrated point loads from squat rack legs.
3/4" Advantech Plywood
Engineered to resist moisture, swelling, and soft spots. Flat, stable surface perfect for rubber gym mats on top.
3/4" Advantech Plywood
Distributes weight evenly across the ground. No concrete slab needed. Keeps the floor off the ground for airflow and longevity.
Add rubber gym flooring on top (we recommend 3/4" stall mats from Tractor Supply — about $50 each) and you've got a training surface that rivals any commercial gym. We've built gym sheds for powerlifters who load 500+ pounds on their squat racks with zero flex.

FAQ Section
❓ QUESTIONS
FAQ — Home Gym Sheds
Can my gym shed floor handle a squat rack and heavy weights?
Absolutely. Our 2x6 floor joists spaced 16 inches on center, topped with 3/4-inch Advantech plywood, are specifically built to handle concentrated loads from gym equipment. We've built gym sheds for powerlifters who load 500+ pounds on their squat racks with zero flex.
What flooring should I put on top?
We recommend 3/4-inch rubber stall mats (available at Tractor Supply for about $50 each). They protect the plywood, absorb dropped weights, and provide excellent traction. Our Advantech plywood provides a flat, stable surface that's perfect for rubber mats.
How do I heat and cool my gym shed?
The most popular option is a ductless mini-split system — it provides both heating and cooling and mounts on the wall. A 12,000 BTU unit handles most gym shed sizes. All of our finish packages come mini-split ready (electrical pre-wired). The Estate package includes the mini-split fully installed. You can also add a mini-split to Classic or Signature for $2,500-$4,000.
Can I mount a heavy bag in the shed?
Yes. Our framing can support a heavy bag mount. We recommend mounting it to a ceiling joist or adding a dedicated support beam during the build. Let us know during your consultation and we'll frame it in at no extra charge.
How much does a finished gym shed cost?
Shell pricing starts at $4,700 for a 10x12 and goes up to $13,500+ for a 16x24. Add a finish package ($8k-$30k+) for a move-in ready gym. Our most popular gym build — a 12x16 with Signature Finish — runs approximately $18k-$24k total. Financing is available through Wisetack with affordable monthly payments.
How long does the build take?
The exterior shell is typically built in 1 day. If you add a finish package, interior work (insulation, drywall, electrical, flooring) takes an additional 1-3 weeks depending on scope. Total timeline from start to working out: usually 2-4 weeks.
Do I need a permit?
Permit requirements vary by municipality. Most Indianapolis-area sheds under 200 sq ft don't require a permit, but it depends on your specific location and HOA. We'll help you figure this out during your free consultation.
Can I add a TV, sound system, or mini fridge?
Absolutely. All finish packages include electrical outlets, so you can plug in anything you'd have in a room of your house. Many customers add a wall-mounted TV, Bluetooth speaker system, and mini fridge. Some even run ceiling fans for extra airflow during summer workouts.
