Custom Pole Barns Built in Indianapolis

Large post-frame buildings with metal exterior, concrete slabs, and crews with over 40 years of experience. Garages, workshops, barns, and commercial buildings — 30x30 and up.

Why Pole Barns?

Why Choose a Pole Barn?

Pole barns — also called post-frame buildings — use heavy-duty wood posts anchored to a concrete slab, with metal siding and roofing. They're faster to build, more affordable, and more customizable than traditional stick-built garages or concrete block structures. Ideal for large garages, workshops, barns, and commercial buildings.

30–50% Less Than Traditional

Post-frame construction uses fewer materials than conventional building. No continuous foundation walls needed — just posts, trusses, and metal. You get more building for less money.

Built in 2–4 Weeks

A traditional garage addition takes 2–4 months. Our pole barns go from permits to finished structure in as little as 2–4 weeks depending on size and complexity.

Zero Maintenance Exterior

Metal siding and roofing never needs painting, won't rot, and laughs at Indiana winters. 40-year paint warranties on metal panels mean your building looks new for decades.

100% Customizable

Choose your size, door placement, window locations, colors, and interior layout. Every pole barn is designed around your property and your needs — not pulled off a truck.

Finish-Out Ready

Pole barns are easy to insulate, wire for electric, plumb, and finish with drywall. Turn your building into a climate-controlled workspace, living quarters, or commercial space.

Concrete Slab Included

Every pole barn we build includes a professionally poured concrete slab floor — not a gravel pad. This is a permanent, real structure on your property.

How We Build Your Pole Barn

Every Indy Shed Company pole barn is custom-built on your property by experienced post-frame contractors with over 40 years of building experience. No pre-fab kits. No shortcuts.

🪵 Post-Frame Construction

Heavy-duty pressure-treated wood posts set in the ground or anchored to concrete piers. Wood trusses engineered for Indiana snow and wind loads. This is how pole barns have been built for generations — proven, strong, and efficient.

🔩 Metal Exterior

26-gauge steel siding and roofing panels in your choice of colors. Professional trim, flashing, and fasteners at every seam. Wainscoting and two-tone color options available for a custom look that matches your home.

🪨 Concrete Slab Floor

Every pole barn includes a professionally poured 4" reinforced concrete slab. Sloped for drainage where needed. This is a permanent structure — not sitting on blocks or a gravel pad.

🚪 Doors & Windows

Overhead garage doors (residential or commercial grade), steel man doors, and windows — configured exactly how you need them. Roll-up doors available for tighter spaces.

🌡️ Optional Interior Finishing

Want to use it year-round? We offer full interior finishing including insulation, vapor barriers, interior plywood or drywall, electrical rough-in, and mini-split HVAC installation. Finishing costs vary by size and scope. Tell us how you plan to use the space and we'll include finishing options in your custom quote.

Pole Barn Permits in Indianapolis & Surrounding Cities

Building a pole barn in Indianapolis, Carmel, Fishers, or other central Indiana cities requires permits. We handle the entire process for you — but here's what you should know.

Indianapolis / Marion County

Structures over 120 sq ft, taller than 15 ft, or on a permanent foundation require an Improvement Location Permit and a Class 2 Structural Permit. We submit site plans, engineered truss specs, and drainage info on your behalf.

Hamilton County (Carmel, Fishers, Noblesville, Westfield)

Accessory structures require a permit through the Hamilton County Plan Commission. Sealed truss designs from a registered Indiana engineer are required. Setback distances from property lines must be shown on the site plan.

Typical Setback Requirements

Most residential zoning requires 5–10 ft from side/rear property lines and 25–35 ft from the front. Accessory structures typically cannot exceed the height of the primary residence. We verify your specific lot's requirements before design.

HOA Considerations

Many Carmel, Fishers, and Zionsville neighborhoods have HOA covenants that restrict accessory building size, placement, and appearance. We design pole barns with color matching, wainscoting, and architectural details that pass HOA review.

We handle ALL of this for you. Permit applications, site plans, engineered truss drawings, HOA submissions, and inspections. You don't have to set foot in a government office. Permit fees are paid directly by the homeowner — we handle the entire application process, paperwork, and submissions. You just cover the filing fees.

Questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a pole barn cost in Indianapolis?

Pole barns typically cost $15 to $40 per square foot depending on size, features, and finishing. A 30x40 garage with overhead doors runs $25,000–$55,000, while larger 40x60+ commercial buildings range from $50,000–$100,000+. Every project is custom-quoted based on your specific needs. Concrete slab is included in all our pricing.

Do I need a permit for a pole barn in Indianapolis?

Yes — in Indianapolis, any structure over 120 sq ft, taller than 15 ft, or built on a permanent foundation requires permits. In Hamilton County (Carmel, Fishers, Noblesville, Westfield), permits are required for all accessory structures. We handle the entire permit process for you — applications, site plans, engineered drawings, and inspections. Permit fees are paid directly by the homeowner to the issuing authority; we take care of all the paperwork and submissions.

What's the difference between a pole barn and a metal building?

A pole barn (post-frame building) uses heavy wood posts as the structural frame, with metal siding and roofing attached to the outside. A metal building uses steel framing throughout. Pole barns are generally more affordable, faster to build, easier to insulate and finish out, and blend better in residential neighborhoods. We build pole barns — not pre-fab steel kit buildings.

Can I finish out the interior of a pole barn?

Absolutely. We offer full interior finishing including insulation (wall and ceiling), vapor barriers, interior plywood or drywall, electrical rough-in, and mini-split HVAC installation. Finishing costs vary based on the size of the building and the level of finish you want — we'll include finishing options in your custom quote so you can see exactly what it costs for your specific project.

How long does it take to build a pole barn?

Most pole barns take 2–4 weeks from groundbreaking to completion, depending on size and complexity. Add 2–6 weeks for the permit approval process before construction begins. Interior finishing adds additional time depending on scope. The total timeline from first call to finished building is typically 6–10 weeks.

What sizes do you build?

Our pole barn crews build from 30x30 up to 40x80 and beyond. Common sizes include 30x30, 30x40, 30x50, 40x40, 40x60, and 40x80. Every size is custom — if you need 36x48, we build 36x48. For structures smaller than 30x30, check out our custom metal sheds which go up to 16x24.

Do you pour the concrete slab too?

Yes — concrete is included in every pole barn project. Our crews have 40 years of experience in both concrete work and post-frame construction. You don't need to hire a separate concrete contractor.

What if I need something smaller than 30x30?

We've got you covered. Our custom metal sheds range from 4x8 all the way up to 16x24 and are built with the same wood-framed construction and metal exterior — just on a smaller scale. They're built on-site by our crew, usually in a single day. Perfect for backyard workshops, gyms, offices, and storage.
